Eye lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure where the excess skin from the lower and upper eyelids is removed. This improves the patient's appearance by providing a more youthful, rested, and refreshed look.

People in their twenties will often request eye lift surgery to improve their looks. Some have a puppy dog look, with the outer eye corner situated lower than the inner corner. These patients usually want almond shaped eyes. Individuals of Asian heritage often want their eyes widened.

When people reach their late thirties, the skin on the eyelids often relaxes and becomes thinner. The eyebrow and cheek also descend, causing the eyes to look crowded and the outer eye corner drops down, too.

To see if you might benefit from an eye lift surgery, look into a mirror and raise your eyebrows and cheeks about 1 cm.

Sagging upper eyelids can be corrected with a brow lift rather than an eye lift surgery. You should discuss this option with your surgeon in order to determine which procedure is best suited to your condition.

The surgical procedure involves a tiny incision inside the lid to remove fat, while the eyeball is protected by a special shield. Most of the eye lift surgery is performed on the outside, so the risk to damage the eye is very low.

The skin around the eyes will be bruised for about 10 days. Occasionally, the swelling persists for a longer period, but this can usually be treated with massage.

Eye lift surgery can be performed under local anesthesia in the doctors office or twilight anesthesia in an out-patient hospital. Either way, your surgeon will ensure you will not feel anything. Most patients have reported discomfort when stitches are being removed; however, some surgeons have a special way of placing the stitches so that the removal is less painful.

Eye lift surgery is less expensive when performed in the office, as there are no hospital fees. The average price for an upper eyelid procedure done in the office is around $1800.

After the surgery you should try to avoid activities that involve straining, stooping or bending. It is also recommended that you avoid situations where foreign material can get into the eye.
