The Lasik laser eye surgery process

You will be escorted to an operative room meant especially for the surgery. The most important equipment that you will see here will be a large machine with an attached microscope along with a computer screen that forms a part of the laser system.

You will have to sit in a reclining chair for the eye surgery process to be carried out. The surgeon will clean the eye and put a tiny amount of an anaesthetic liquid into it. Next, you will experience the first signs of discomfort when suction will be created on the cornea by placing a ring around the eye. At this juncture of the eye surgery process you may also find your vision blurring however, there is no cause to worry, as it is a temporary thing. A microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea, which is folded back. You will then be asked to stare at a laser beam for about a minute or so. Then with the help of the laser beam tissue from the cornea is cut away to reform its shape.

You may all of a sudden smell something burning which is nothing but the intense laser beam acting on the cornea. You may also hear a ticking sound at this point of the surgery process. While these sounds and smells may be disconcerting to the patient, it is all well controlled so you need not be anxious.

The role of the computer in this whole surgery process is to control the laser beam and the energy being directed to the eye. After the cornea is reshaped, the flap is placed back in place. This entire surgery process is over in no more than half an hour.

After the surgery, a patch or an eye shield is placed over the operated eye to prevent it from any kind of accidental injury or mishandling.
